Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified the following: TLV-TWA for soluble iron (Fe, CASRN: 1309-37-1,) LDLo (human,) and LD50 (rat) for intraperitoneal and oral routes. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route based on the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. Although human toxicity is highly preferred, the dose was reported in mL/kg and no additional information was available for the necessary unit conversion. Of two available rat oral LD50 toxicities identified, the most recent, verifiable dose was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 values were derived according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = MW-adjusted TLV-TWA (soluble Fe)
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Rat oral LD50 (450 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL-3 and TEEL-2 values that are more conservative than those in Rev. 29A, and a TEEL-1 which is consistent. In Rev. 29A, the original source used as a basis (a rat oral LD50 resulting in a TEEL-3 of 180 mg/m3) was not identified during research. Instead, the most current rat oral LD50 was selected as the TEEL basis.
