Technical Basis
A review of available data sources identified: LD50 acute toxicity data and a TLV-TWA for water soluble iron salts (CASRN: 7439-89-6). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4 . The most preferred species and route acute toxicity source, a rat oral LD50 for ferrous ammonium sulfate hexahydrate, was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. A compound adjustment factor (Section 3.2.2) was used to account for the waters of hydration. The TEEL-2 value was derived according to Table 3.5. The TLV-TWA for iron soluble salts was selected as the TEEL-1 adjusted with a compound adjustment factor (Section 3.2.2).
• TEEL-1 = MW-adjusted TLV-TWA (iron soluble salts, CASRN: 7439-89-6, 1 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = MW-adjusted Rat oral LD50 (ferrous ammonium sulfate hexahydrate, 3250 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL-3 and TEEL-2 values that are inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A and current TEEL-1 values and methodology are consistent. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 and TEEL-2 were derived from the TEEL-1, while the current TEEL-3 was calculated from animal toxicity for the ferrous ammonium sulfate hexahydrate, in place of its anhydrous form. The current TEEL-3 methodology is more preferred, as is deriving a TEEL-2 from this value (Section 3.4.2).
