Technical Basis
A review of available sources did not identify exposure limits for this chemical, but toxicity data was available including LD50 rat oral toxicity values and human oral LDLo and TDLo data. The LD50 rat oral toxicity data was selected as the basis for TEEL-3 according to the type of exposure, species, and route hierarchies discussed in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2. Although human data ranks highest in preference (Section 3.3.2,) the lowest published toxicity data (e.g., LDLo and TDLo) are considered less reliable as their basis is a single data point instead of multiple points (Section 3.3.1). Additionally, both human doses are from an older source (1949). Therefore, the LD50 rat oral data was selected for TEEL-3 development. TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 values were calculated according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Rat oral LD50 (526 mg/kg)
This review resulted in slightly more conservative TEEL values than those published in Rev. 29A. The methodology is the same between the current recommendation and Rev. 29A (rat oral LD50,) however the previous TEEL-3 dose was 757mg/kg value, whereas a more conservative dose was selected for this review.
