Technical Basis
A review of available data sources identified the following: LD50 (rat) exposures for oral and dermal routes for lithium nitrate. Species and route are ranked according to the preferences stated in Section 3.3.2, while the data source was evaluated according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1.
Chemically, lithium nitrate decomposes at high temperatures (> 500 °C; and LiNO3 + Heat = LiO2 + O2 + NO2) and is soluble in water (LiNO3 + H2O = HNO3 + LiOH,) suggesting it is appropriate to evaluate possible reaction byproducts; available 60-minute AEGL-3 for nitric acid (CASRN: 7697-37-2,) and nitrogen dioxide (CASRN: 10102-44-0) were also considered, in addition to a weight adjusted PAC-3 for lithium hydroxide (CASRN: 7790-69-4.)6 These were all more conservative than the calculated TEEL-3 and require a specific set of conditions to arise. Given this, and the availability of toxicity data for the chemical of interest, the oral rat LD50 was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 estimates were calculated from this TEEL-3 value, according to guidance in Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Oral, rat LD50 (1426 mg/kg)
These recommended TEEL values are inconsistent with Rev. 29A due to a different basis. The Rev 29A basis was a PNOS, which is an appropriate basis for limited conditions (Section 3.5.2 and glossary).
