Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified acute toxicity data for nitric oxide. In addition, AEGLs for a similar chemical, nitrogen dioxide (CASRN: 10102-44-0), where evaluated for TEEL development. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. The AEGLs for nitrogen dioxide were selected due to their priority among Protective Action Criteria (Section 1) and the NRC assessment that “The toxicity of NO is associated with methemoglobin formation and oxidation to NO2.” (pg. 168 of AEGL support documentation).
• PAC-1 = AEGL-1
• PAC-2 = AEGL-2
• PAC-3 = AEGL-3
This review generated PAC values consistent with Rev. 29A*.
