Technical Basis
Paraquat is a cation, chemically available as paraquat dichloride. A review of available sources identified the following exposure limits: IDLH (1990) and TWAs (PEL, REL, TLV). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. The IDLH (1990) was selected as the TEEL-3. The TEEL-2 value was derived according to Table 3.5. The TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis.
• TEEL-1 = TLV-TWA (0.05 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = IDLH (1990, 1.5 mg/m3)
This review generated TEEL values inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was rat intraperitoneal LDLo, while the current TEEL-3 is an IDLH, a more preferred source (Table 3.1). The Rev. 29A and current TEEL-2 use the same methodology (Table 3.5), with differences due to the change in TEEL-3. The Rev. 29A and current TEEL-1 use the same basis (TLV-TWA) and methodology (Table 3.5), with differences due to a revision of the value in 2017.
