Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified exposure limits (LOC, OEL-STELs, TWAs (OEL, REL, PEL, TLV)), and LD50 acute toxicity for various routes (oral, intraperitoneal) and species (rat, dog, cat, guinea pig). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. The LD50 of the most preferred route and species, a dog oral LD50, was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. The LOC was selected as the TEEL-2. The higher priority OEL-STELs were considered over the TWAs for the TEEL-1, and the most conservative, OEL-STEL (Austria), was selected as the TEEL-1.
• PAC-1 = TEEL-1 = OEL-STEL (Austria, 0.1 mg/m3)
• PAC-2 = TEEL-2 = LOC (0.00015 gm/m3)
• PAC-3 = TEEL-3 = Dog oral LD50 (25 mg/kg)
This review generated PAC-1 and PAC-3 values inconsistent with Rev. 29A and a PAC-2 consistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was also an oral LD50; however, the recommended basis is a more preferred species (dog > rat). The TEEL-2 values, source, and methodology are consistent. The Rev. 29A TEEL-1 was derived from the TEEL-2 (Table 3.5) while the current TEEL-1 is more preferred source, an OEL-STEL (see Note, Table 3.5).
