Technical Basis
A review of limited available sources identified the following exposures: PEL-TWA, LDLo (Chrysotile asbestos, CASRN: 12001-29-5,) and TDLo for intraperitoneal routes. The toxicity data were not selected for TEEL estimates. As stated in the TEEL handbook, TDLo and LDLo are usually generated from a single data point and are therefore a less rigorously derived value than the PEL-STEL (See A-3). The PEL-STEL was selected as the TEEL-1 basis; the PEL-STEL was reported in units of fiber/mL, which were converted using a 1986 EPA estimate (see reference 3) TEEL-2 and TEEL-3 values were calculated from this TEEL-1 value, according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = PEL-STEL (1 fiber/mL; converted to 0.03 mg/m3, assuming 33 fibers/mL is approximately 1 mg/m3).
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-1 x 11
• TEEL-3 =TEEL-2 x 6
This review generated TEEL values that are more conservative than those in Rev. 29A. Revision 29A and the current TEELs have consistent methods (PEL-STEL derived TEELs,) however the current PEL-STEL value identified in research was lower, resulting in comparable, but lower TEELs.
