Technical Basis
A review of available sources did not identify exposure limits or acute toxicity data for periodic acid. Instead, the similar compounds (iodine, hydriodic acid, nitric acid, and sodium periodate) were reviewed and evaluated to determine the best basis for the TEELs. From the chemical compounds reviewed, sodium periodate (CASRN: 7790-28-5), was selected based on chemical similarity (Section 3.4.6) and available, published toxicity data. According to Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, mouse intraperitoneal LD50 toxicity data was used as the basis for TEEL-3 using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 values were derived according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Mouse intraperitoneal LD50 (sodium periodate, 7790-28-5, 58 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL-3 and TEEL-1 values inconsistent and TEEL-2 values consistent with Rev. 29A; However, the Rev. 29A and current values were developed from different sources. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 was calculated using MW-adjusted iodic acid PAC values (CASRN: 7782-68-5) as the basis; instead, the current TEELs were developed from sodium periodate toxicity data (Section 3.4.6, CASRN: 7790-28-5).
