Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified LD50 toxicity data for various species (rat, mouse, cat) and routes (intraperitoneal, oral, dermal). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. A mouse oral LD50 (480 mg/kg) and rat intraperitoneal LD50 (135 mg/kg) were evaluated for the TEEL-3 basis and yielded similar values, 52 mg/m3 and 53 mg/m3, respectively. Although the mouse data yielded a slightly more conservative value, the rat data is from a more recent source (1983 vs. 1964) and is a more preferred species; therefore, it was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. TEEL-1 and TEEL-2 values were calculated according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Rat intraperitoneal LD50 (135 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL values that are consistent with Rev. 29A*.
