Technical Basis
A review of available sources did not identify exposure limits or acute toxicity data for platinum cyanide. When compared, exposure limits indicate that platinum is the more toxicity ion of this compound. As such, analysts evaluated exposure limits (IDLH, TWAs) for platinum soluble salt compounds (CAS 7440-06-4) for TEEL development. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. The TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis and a compound adjustment factor was applied according to Section 3.2.2. The platinum IDLHs (1990 and 1994) were considered, however both were developed from PEL-TWAs; as such, analysts determined it was more appropriate to derived TEEL-2 and TEEL-3 values according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = MW-adjusted TLV-TWA (platinum, CASRN: 7440-06-4; 0.002 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-1 x 11
• TEEL-3 = TEEL-2 x 6
This review generated TEEL values consistent with Rev. 29A.
