Technical Basis
A review of available sources did not identify exposure limits or acute toxicity data for barium chromate. Analysts evaluated exposure limits for chromic acid and chromates/chromium(VI) compounds for TEEL development. The 1990 IDLH for chromic acid and chromates (as chromium trioxide) was selected as the TEEL-3 basis, the PEL-C was selected as the TEEL-2 basis, and the TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis. A compound adjustment factor was applied (Section 3.2.2) to these exposure limits.
• TEEL-1 = MW-adjusted TLV-TWA (chromium(VI) compounds, CASRN:18540-29-9; 0.0002 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = MW-adjusted PEL-C(chromium(VI) compounds, CASRN:18540-29-9; 0.1 mg/m3)
• TEEL-3 = MW-adjusted IDLH (1990, chromic acid and chromates, CASRN:18540-29-9; 30 mg/m3)
This review generated TEEL values inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 source and methodology are consistent; therefore, differences may be due to rounding. The Rev. 29A TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 values were derived from the TEEL-3, while the current TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 bases are exposure limits for chromium(VI) compounds (TLV-TWA and PEL-C, respectively) adjusted for differences in molecular weight.
