Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified exposure limits for soluble barium (CASRN: 7440-39-3): TLV-TWA and IDLH (1990, 1994). The 1990 IDLH was evaluated and was selected as the TEEL-3 basis per guidance in the handbook (Table 3.1, Section 3.2). The IDLH was adjusted using a compound adjustment factor (Section 3.2.2). The TEEL-2 was derived according to Table 3.5. The TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis and adjusted using a compound adjustment factor (Section 3.2.2).
• TEEL-1 = MW-adjusted TLV-TWA (0.5 mg/m3, soluble barium, CASRN: 7440-39-3)
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = MW-adjusted IDLH (1990, 250 mg/m3, soluble barium CASRN: 7440-39-3)
This review generated TEEL-3 and TEEL-2 values that are more conservative than those in Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was the revised IDLH, which is a less preferred source than the 1990 values. The current TEEL-1 and Rev. 29A method and values are consistent.
