Technical Basis
Pyrene is classified as a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)1. An OSHA PEL-TWA for the PAH chemical class was identified and used as the starting point for a TEEL-1 value2. A review of available data sources identified the following: LC503, LD50 (mouse4, rat5) and TDLo6 toxicity values inhalation and oral exposures. A duration of 1 day was assumed for LCeq calculations. A 240-minute exposure was assumed for the LC50 ten Berge time-scaling7. Toxicity data were evaluated for their relative preference ranking8.
Although the LC50 is the most preferred, it was not selected due to the uncertainty of the assumed exposure duration. Between the next two preferred (rat and mouse, same source), the mouse oral LD50, was more conservative and selected to estimate a TEEL-3 value. A TEEL-2 estimate was calculated from the TEEL-3 value, according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = PEL-TWA x 3
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Estimated from mouse, oral LD50 (800 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL values inconsistent with those published in Rev. 29A.

A time-scaling exposure of 240 minutes was assumed (Section 3.3.2) and ten Berge time-scaled to 60 minutes (Section 3.3.4.)
Species and route are ranked according to the preferences stated in Section 3.3.2, while the data selection hierarchy from Table 3.1.
