Technical Basis
A review of available sources did not identify acute toxicity or exposure limits for sodium. Analysts identified an NFPA health hazard rating of 3, reported by the state of New Jersey. In addition, analysts evaluated sodium hydroxide exposure limits (CASRN: 1310-73-2, ERPGs) as a similar chemical due to its generation on contact with water and associated with human inhalation health effects (Section 3.4.6). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. An NFPA=3 was evaluated as an assumed HHR=3 (Section 3.4.5, TEEL-3 = 79 mg/m3). Considering that the ERPG for sodium hydroxide is comparable in magnitude (ERPG-3 = 50 mg/m3) but is a much more preferred source (Table 3.1), analysts select the sodium hydroxide ERPGs as sodium TEELs.
• TEEL-1 = ERPG-1 (sodium hydroxide, CASRN: 1310-73-2; 0.5 mg/m3)
• TEEL-2 = ERPG-2 (sodium hydroxide, CASRN: 1310-73-2, 5 mg/m3)
• TEEL-3 = ERPG-3 (sodium hydroxide, CASRN: 1310-73-2, 50 mg/m3)
This review generated TEEL values inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was a mouse LD50 not found during the review, from which TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 were derived. The current TEELs are ERPGs for sodium hydroxide, a more preferred source based on known byproduct and reported concern of sodium inhalation.
