Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified acute toxicity data (LC50, LD50) for several species and routes and exposure limits (IDLH, LOC, TWAs). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. The original (1990) IDLH basis is reported as a rat oral LD50, while the revised (1994) IDLH includes acute inhalation data. Analysts evaluated animal acute toxicity data, resulting in TEEL-3 values ranging between 1 and 3 mg/m3. Considering this, and the inclusion of acute inhalation toxicity data, the 1994 IDLH was selected as the TEEL-3. The LOC was selected as the TEEL-2. The TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis.
• TEEL-1 = TLV-TWA (0.1 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = LOC (0.0035 g/m3)
• TEEL-3 = IDLH (1994, 10 mg/m3)
This review generated a TEEL-1 and TEEL-3 values inconsistent with Rev 29A. In Rev. 29A, the TEEL-1 was derived according to Table 3.5; however, this review used the TLV-TWA as the TEEL-1 basis. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 was the original (1990) IDLH, while the current TEEL-3 is the revised (1994) due to its inclusion of inhalation data. The 1994 IDLH was used according to Handbook guidelines (Section 4.2-4.3). The Rev. 29A and current TEEL-2 values, source, and methodology are consistent.
