Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified exposure limits (TLV-TWA, LOC) and multiple animal LD50 toxicity data for various routes. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. The LD50 of the most preferred species and route, a rat oral LD50, was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. Although there is an LOC for this chemical, it was not selected as the TEEL-2 since the value was greater than the TEEL-3 derived from rat LD50 toxicity data. Instead, the TEEL-2 value was derived according to Table 3.5. The TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis.
• TEEL-1 = TLV-TWA*3 (0.01 mg/m3)
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Rat oral LD50 (1600 µg/kg => 1.6 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL values inconsistent with Rev. 29A. In Rev. 29A, the TEEL-3 basis was a dog oral LD50 that was not found in the current review. The Rev. 29A TEEL-2 was the LOC, from which the TEEL-1 value was derived. The current TEEL-3 basis is a rat oral LD50; a TEEL-2 was derived from the TEEL-3. The TLV-TWA was identified and used as the current TEEL-1 basis.
