Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified acute toxicity data (LDLo). In addition, there are exposure limits for a mixture of terphenyl isomers (CASRN: 26140-60-3; IDLH, ceiling limits). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. The mixed isomer IDLH was evaluated for TEEL development, but it was not selected because there is available toxicity data for p-terphenyl. As such, the rat oral LDLo was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. The terphenyl TLV-C was selected as the TEEL-2. The TEEL-1 value were derived according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TLV-C (terphenyls, CASRN: 26140-60-3, 5 mg/m3)
• TEEL-3 = Rat oral LDLo (500 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 values consistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was a rabbit LD50 not found during the current review; instead, the current TEEL-3 basis is rat LDLo.
