Technical Basis
A review of available sources did not identify exposure limits or acute toxicity for this chemical. Instead, acute toxicity data for a similar chemical, tetramethylammonium hydroxide (CASRN: 75-59-2) were evaluated for TEEL development. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. The most preferred species and route, a rat oral LD50, was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. The study reported an LD50 range (5-50 mg active ingredient/kg); deaths were observed only for the upper range reported (50 mg active ingredient/kg), therefore analysts used this for TEEL-3 calculations and a molecular weight adjustment was applied (Section 3.4.3.2). TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 values were derived according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = MW-adjusted rat oral LD50 (tetramethylammonium hydroxide, CASRN: 75-59-2, 50 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL values that are inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A and current TEEL-3 are both molecular weights adjusted acute toxicity for tetramethylammonium hydroxide; however, the previous basis was a rabbit LDLo while the current basis is a more preferred route and species, a rat oral LD50. The Rev. 29A and current TEEL-2/TEEL-1 use the same methodology (Table 3.5), with differences due to the change in TEEL-3.
