Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified the following: A MAK-TWA exposure limit, rat (LC50, oral LD50) and human (TCLo) toxicity data. Sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were evaluated using the type of exposure, species, and route preferability stated in Sections 3.3.1 and 3.3.2. The concentration is scaled to a 60-minute equivalent using the ten Berge equation (Section 3.3.4). The rat LC50 data was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. The TEEL-2 was derived according to Table 3.5. A respirable MAK-TWA was selected for TEEL-1 basis (the respirable limit is selected based on particle diameter mentioned in an ECHA study).
• TEEL-1 = MAK-TWA x 3
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Rat LC50 (>5410 mg/m³/4H)
This review resulted in TEEL values that are inconsistent with those in Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was a rat oral LD50, while the current basis is a more preferred route (LC50 > LD50). The Rev. 29A TEEL-2 basis was an incomplete source for a human TCLo from an older source (1910), therefore it was not selected during this review. Instead, the current TEEL-2 is derived according to Table 3.5. The Rev. 29A TEEL-1 was derived from the TEEL-2 value, while the current TEEL-1 is derived from a MAK-TWA exposure limit.
