Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified LD50 toxicity data for various species (dog, rat, rabbit) and routes (oral, dermal), and exposure limits (MAK-C, MAK-STEL). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. The LD50 of the most preferred species and route, a dog oral LD50, was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. The MAK-C was selected as the TEEL-2. The MAK-STEL was selected as the TEEL-1.
• TEEL-1 = MAK-STEL (4 ppm, 12.2 mg/m3)
• TEEL-2 = MAK-C (15 mg/m3)
• TEEL-3 = Dog oral LD50 (225 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL-1 and TEEL-2 values inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-1 basis was the MAK-TWA while the current recommendation used the higher priority MAK-STEL. Although the TEEL-2 basis for both Rev. 29A and the current recommendation are MAK-C limits, this review identified a more conservative source than Rev. 29A. The TEEL-3 methodology and values remain consistent.
