Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified acute toxicity data (LD50, LDLo) for several species and routes. Analyst also evaluated exposure limits and acute toxicity data for cadmium chloride (CASRN: 10108-64-2). In addition, AEGLs for cadmium (Cd, CASRN: 7440-43-9) were considered to determine expected magnitude of TEELs for cadmium chloride hemipentahydrate. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. The rat LD50 resulted in a TEEL-3 10x those of the most preferred toxicity data for cadmium chloride and the magnitude of cadmium AEGLs. As such, analysts selected the dog intravenous LDLo for cadmium chloride and applied a molecular weight adjusted (Section 3.4.3.2). The TEEL-2 was derived according to Table 3.5. Analysts selected the cadmium chloride OEL-TWA (Sweden) and applied a molecular weight adjusted (Section 3.4.3.2).
• TEEL-1 = MW-adjusted OEL-TWA (cadmium chloride, CASRN: 10108-64-2, Sweden, 0.001 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = MW-adjusted dog intravenous LDLo (cadmium chloride, CASRN: 10108-64-2, 5 mg/kg)
This review generated TEEL values that are inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEELs were molecular weight adjusted cadmium chloride TEELs; the cadmium chloride bases were AEGLs. Per Section 3.2.2, compound adjustment factors are not applied to AEGLs. Instead, the current TEEL-3 basis is a dog intravenous LDLo for cadmium chloride, resulting in a TEEL-3 value of comparable magnitude as the cadmium AEGL-3. The TEEL-2 was derived from this TEEL-3 (Table 3.5), and the TEEL-1 basis was an exposure limit for cadmium chloride (OEL-TWA, Sweden).
