Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified the following: exposure limits (TWAs, MAK-STEL) and numerous acute toxicity data. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. Inhalation exposures were scaled to 60-minute equivalents using the ten Berge equation (Section 3.3.4).
The lowest reported rat LC50 was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. A rat oral TDLo with endpoints that would impede escape (tremors, difficulty breathing) was selected as the TEEL-2 basis. The MAK-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis.
• TEEL-1 = MAK-STEL (2.0 mg/m3)
• TEEL-2 = Rat oral TDLo (250 mg/kg/10D, endpoints: tremors & difficulty breathing)
• TEEL-3 = Rat LC50 (150 mg/m3/4H)
This review generated TEEL-3 values lower than those in Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was a rat oral LD50, while the current basis is a more preferred route/source (Table 3.1, Section 3.3.1). The Rev. 29A and current TEEL-2 values and source are consistent. The Rev. 29A TEEL-1 basis was a TLV-TWA, while the current TEEL-1 is a more preferred source, a STEL (MAK).
