Technical Basis
A review of available sources did not identify exposure or acute toxicity data for cobalt nitrite. Instead, exposure limits for inorganic cobalt (TLV-TWA, IDLH, CASRN: 7440-48-4) were evaluated as TEEL bases. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Although the IDLH was considered as a TEEL-3 basis, the CDC record does not indicate this value applies to inorganic compounds. Instead, the TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis (inorganic compounds, as Co) and a compound adjustment factor was applied (Section 3.2.2). The TEEL-2 and TEEL-3 values were derived according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = MW-adjusted TLV-TWA (cobalt, CASRN: 7440-48-4, 0.02 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-1 x 11
• TEEL-3 = TEEL-2 x 6
This review generated TEEL values consistent with Rev. 29A.
