Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified exposure limits (LOC, TLV-TWA) and acute toxicity data (LC¬50, LD50) for several species and routes. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. The most preferred species and route, a rat LC50, was selected as the TEEL-3 basis; no duration was listed; therefore, analysts assumed a 4-hour duration (Section 3.3.2) and it was scaled to 60-minute equivalent using the ten Berge equation (Section 3.3.4). The LOC was selected as the TEEL-2. The TLV-TWA was selected as the TEEL-1 basis.
• TEEL-1 = TLV-TWA (inhalable fraction, 0.05 mg/m3) x 3
• TEEL-2 = LOC (0.003 g/m3)
• TEEL-3 = Rat LC50 (303 mg/m3/4H assumed)
This review generated TEEL-3 and TEEL-2 values that are consistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-1 was derived from the TEEL-2, while the current TEEL-1 basis is an exposure limit (TLV-TWA).
