Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified various acute animal toxicity studies (LD50). DDE is a degradation and metabolite byproduct of DDT; as such, analysts also evaluated available exposure limits for DDT (CASRN: 50-29-3) for TEEL development. Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. Analysts determined that consideration of DDT/DDD/DDE as similar chemicals (Section 3.4.6) was appropriate and is consistent with the CDC (ATSDR). As such, analysts selected the DDT IDLH (1990/1994) as the TEEL-3 (Section 3.4.6). The TEEL-2 value was derived according to Table 3. The DDT OEL-STEL (15-minute, Poland) was selected as the TEEL-1.
• PAC-1 = TEEL-1 = OEL-STEL (Poland; DDT, CASRN: 50-29-3, 0.8 mg/m3)
• PAC-2 = TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• PAC-3 = TEEL-3 = IDLH (1990/1994, DDT, CASRN: 50-29-3; 500 mg/m3)
This review generated PAC values with inconsistent with Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A TEEL-3 basis was mouse oral LD50 data; instead, the current TEEL-3, a DDT IDLH, was selected because DDD is a degradation and metabolite byproduct of DDT, an approach consistent with the CDC. Rev. 29A and current TEEL-2 use the same methodology, with differences due to the change in TEEL-3. The Rev. 29A TEEL-1 was derived from the TEEL-2 (Table 3.5), while the current TEEL-1 is an DDT OEL-STEL, selected for same reasons stated above.
