Technical Basis
Considering the species and route preferability listed in Section 3.3.2, two rat oral lethal doses (50% kill) were found from different sources. One source, from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is from 1982 and the most recent source (1996) is SAX. As both sources are credible, the latter, more recent dose is chosen for TEEL development.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = Estimated from rat oral LD50 (9110 mg/kg)
This review generated less conservative TEEL values compared with those published in Rev. 29A. In Rev. 29A, the less recent NIH 1982 dose was the TEEL-3 basis, while the current recommendation is based on a more recent study.
