Technical Basis
A review of available sources identified the following: oral LD50 (mouse, rat) and Health Hazard Rating (HHR=2). Data sources were selected according to the hierarchy listed in Table 3.1 and Section 3.4.5. Toxicity data were selected according to type of exposure, species, and route according to the hierarchies stated in Sections 3.3.1, 3.3.2, and evaluated using factors in Tables 3.2, 3.3, and 3.4. Based on the guidelines in Section 3.4.5, the rat oral LD50 was selected as the TEEL-3 basis. The HHR=2 was evaluated, generated TEEL values comparable to the LD50. TEEL-2 and TEEL-1 values were derived according to Table 3.5.
• TEEL-1 = TEEL-2/11
• TEEL-2 = TEEL-3/6
• TEEL-3 = rat oral LD50 (3820 mg/kg)
The current TEEL values are more conservative than those in Rev. 29A. The Rev. 29A and current bases are both rat oral LD50; however, the current dose is more conservative (3820 mg/kg vs. 7070 mg/kg). Investigating further, these reported LD50 are likely from the same original source (Gerarde and Gerarde 1974, referenced in ASTDR report, Table 2.-2, pg.12,) therefore the use of a more conservative value is appropriate (Section 3.3.1).
