On, September 7, 2024, SNL/NM hosted the largest Family Day to date. The event consisted of activities happening across the complex to include Tech Areas I, II and IV, as well as Hardin Field (on Kirkland AFB) and Manzano Mesa Park (located off base in Albuquerque, NM). The event organizers had over 18,000 people register to attend, which included adult family members of SNL MOW. Due to SNL/NM being located on KAFB there was additional security requirements for all people coming on base beyond what SNL/NM required.
Creating an Event Action Plan for SNL/NM Family Day brought together event organizers, facilities, corporate communications, SNL Medical, ProForce, and Kirtland Air Force Base to determine hazards and risks associated with having a large influx of non-Sandia's on site. The plan focused on the coordinated response to different types of emergencies, should the event transition into an incident.
Through the planning process we were able to gain the buy in from local area responders who ended up supporting our event in person within our EOC. Creating a robust communication plan that included mutual aid resources ahead of an incident was critical to ensuring a streamlined response when those resources were needed.
Engaging in the planning process for the Event Action Plan earlier in the planning of the event. This would have given us the ability to ask more questions and determine what additional resources could be necessary for the safety of the event. This also would have given us the opportunity to engage more internal and external partners in the process. Emergency Management is all about coordination and teamwork!
